Best AEO Tools in 2026: 10 Answer Engine Optimization Tools Compared
On this page

AEO tools (answer engine optimization tools) show whether ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot mention and cite your brand.

Our 10 picks for 2026 fall into four groups: monitoring and analytics, all-in-one platforms, enterprise suites, and execution with agents. The right one depends on who will do the work.

Best AEO tools at a glance

Each tool here is strongest at a different job. Pick by the work you need done, not the longest feature list. We've grouped them by what they're best for, from monitoring and analytics to all-in-one platforms, enterprise, and execution with agents.

  • Lantern (execution with agents): best for teams that want agents to do the work, with a person approving it.
  • Peec AI (monitoring and analytics): best for citation-gap analysis and reporting with unlimited users.
  • Otterly.AI (monitoring and analytics): best budget AEO tracker with built-in page audits.
  • HubSpot AEO (monitoring and analytics): best low-cost start for teams that run marketing in HubSpot.

What is an AEO tool?

AEO tools are AI tools for brand visibility. An AEO tool is software that runs the questions your buyers ask AI, records whether your brand is mentioned, cited and recommended, and shows what to change so the next answer includes you. New to the term? Start with our explainer on what answer engine optimization is.

Our AI visibility tools buyer's guide covers measurement quality, and our GEO tools comparison covers platforms that act. This guide asks which tools help your answers get picked, and which team each suits.

The core AEO job is closing the citation gap: the prompts where you should appear but a competitor or a third-party page gets cited instead. That gap mostly lives off your site. In Lantern's Where New Brands Earn AI Authority research, independent sources made up 67.7% of ChatGPT and 77.6% of Google AI citation activity for the brands studied, while brand-owned pages made up just 1.1% and 0.5%. A tool that only grades your own pages sees a small slice of the answer.

Monitoring vs optimization vs execution: what's the difference?

Monitoring tells you where you stand, optimization tells you what to fix, and execution helps do the fixing. Most AEO tools are strong at one level and lighter on the next.

If you only need tools to monitor brand mentions in AI answer engines, the monitoring level is enough to start. The other two levels add a to-do list and help with the work.

Three levels of AEO tools
LevelWhat you getWho does the workExample tools
MonitoringMentions, citations, sentiment, share of voice per prompt and engineYour team, from scratchSE Visible, Ahrefs Brand Radar
OptimizationMonitoring plus citation-gap reports, page audits, prioritized recommendationsYour team, with a clear to-do listOtterly.AI, Peec AI, Scrunch, HubSpot AEO, Semrush
ExecutionOptimization plus drafted content, refreshes, technical fixes or outreachThe tool drafts, your team reviewsWritesonic, AthenaHQ, Profound, Lantern, Goodie

Monitoring is enough if you already have writers and PR capacity. If insights sit in a dashboard for weeks, the cheapest tool is the one that ships work.

How we evaluated these AEO tools

Six-card framework for evaluating AEO tools: engines on your plan, prompt volume, citation-gap data, accuracy and sentiment, execution, and price per prompt.
The criteria we used to compare AEO tools in October 2026.

Judge each tool on seven questions:

  1. Engines: which engines are on the plan you'd buy, not the top tier.
  2. Prompt volume: how many prompts are tracked and how often. In Lantern's AI Recognition Gap research, growing a tracked set from 10 to 100 questions cut variation in reported brand coverage by about 73%, so tiny prompt sets mislead.
  3. Citation and source data: can you see the URLs cited, and which name competitors but not you?
  4. Accuracy and sentiment: does it check what AI says against your real facts?
  5. Execution vs monitoring only: does it produce work, or only advice?
  6. Integrations: Search Console, Google Analytics, CMS, exports, API.
  7. Price per tracked prompt: entry price divided by prompts, adjusted for engines.

One caution before you buy. Google's guide to optimizing for generative AI features says "No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems," and that optimizing for AI search "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO." No tool on this list can guarantee a citation.

The 10 best AEO tools in 2026

Each entry uses the same structure. Prices are as of 26 October 2026, from each vendor's own site. The tools are grouped by what they're best for: monitoring and analytics (1 to 3), all-in-one platforms (4 to 7), enterprise (8) and execution with agents (9 and 10).

1. Peec AI

  • What it is: an analytics-first AEO tracker with deep source data.
  • Best for: teams that want to see exactly which sources win answers, and share dashboards with many people.
  • AI engines: choose 3 models from ChatGPT, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Copilot, Gemini and Naver AI on self-serve plans. Extra models, including Perplexity, are add-ons; Claude is listed on Enterprise.

  • Best for: teams running marketing in HubSpot, or anyone wanting a cheap, simple start.
  • AI engines: ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
  • Key AEO features: visibility score, share of voice, sentiment, suggested prompts, citation analysis by source type, and prioritized recommendations such as a new post, a page update or third-party outreach. HubSpot says you don't need its CMS or another HubSpot subscription.
  • Starting price: $50 a month, or $45 a month paid annually, with 25 prompts; buy more any time. 28-day free trial with 25 prompts and no credit card. AEO is also included in Marketing Hub Professional (25 prompts) and Enterprise (50 prompts), which add CRM-based prompt suggestions.
  • Watch-outs: three engines, and each extra brand is another $50 instance. Our HubSpot AEO Grader review covers the free one-time check.

4. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit (and Semrush One)

  • What it is: Semrush's AI search add-on with visibility scores, prompt tracking and an AI search site audit. Semrush One bundles it with the SEO toolkit.
  • Best for: SEO teams already living in Semrush who want AI answers next to keyword data.
  • AI engines: Semrush's help docs list ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode for prompt tracking.

  • AI engines: ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews on Starter, Basic and Growth; 9 platforms on Enterprise.
  • Key AEO features: 15 AI articles and 10 site audits a month on Starter, automatic AI fixes, Search Console, GA4 and WordPress integrations, and an Action Center that ranks citation gaps and fixes.
  • Starting price: Starter $79 a month billed annually (50 prompts, 1 user), Basic $199, Growth $399, Enterprise custom. Start free with no credit card.
  • Watch-outs: sentiment analysis starts on Growth, and the Action Center is a trial on Growth and full only on Enterprise. Weighing it against Profound? Our Profound vs Writesonic comparison covers both.

6. Scrunch

  • What it is: an AI visibility platform focused on how AI systems and agents read your site, from site audits to its Agent Experience Platform (AXP).
  • Best for: technical SEO and web teams worried about crawlability, AI bot traffic and machine-readable pages.
  • AI engines: Core tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot. Enterprise covers 9, adding Claude, Gemini, Meta AI, AI Mode and Grok.
  • Key AEO features: citations and sources, sentiment, AI bot traffic, recommendations, 5 site audits and 1 page optimization a month, and basic content generation. AXP is on Enterprise.
  • Starting price: Core $250 a month (125 prompts, 5,000 responses, 5 users); 7-day free trial. Enterprise is custom, and Scrunch says annual discounts are offered to Enterprise clients.

7. AthenaHQ

  • What it is: a credit-based AEO platform that pairs prompt and source analysis with a content optimization agent and on-page and off-page actions.
  • Best for: mid-market and ecommerce teams that want wide engine coverage on a published paid tier.

  • Key AEO features: source and competitor insights and content recommendations (free); on Starter, on-page and off-page actions, a content optimization agent, integrations and CSV export. Enterprise adds claim review.
  • Starting price: Essential free (300 credits); Starter $295 a month (3,600 credits, where 1 credit is 1 AI response); Enterprise custom. 17% off annually.
  • Watch-outs: "unlimited prompts" is bounded by credits. By our math, 30 prompts on 4 engines every day for a 30-day month uses all 3,600. API access and extra credits are paid add-ons on Starter.

8. Profound

  • What it is: an enterprise AI search platform built around an "AI Marketer" that researches, writes and reports, plus Answer Engine Insights, Prompt Volumes and Agent Analytics for AI-sourced traffic.
  • Best for: large brands that need prompt-volume data, reusable agent workflows and SSO/SAML with SOC 2 under one contract.
  • AI engines: the free trial covers ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Enterprise tracks up to 9, including Perplexity, AI Mode, Copilot, DeepSeek, Claude and Exa Search.
  • Key AEO features: citation, sentiment and ranking tracking; proactive opportunity suggestions; Profound Sheets for running agents at scale; ChatGPT Shopping, exports and API on Enterprise.
  • Starting price: free trial (50 prompts daily for 7 days); Enterprise is custom.
  • Watch-outs: no public paid price, and trial users can't customize prompts, so a trial won't test your own buyer questions. See our Profound alternatives for self-serve options.

9. Lantern

  • What it is: an AI marketing platform that tracks how ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude describe your brand, connects that to Search Console, Google Analytics and AI referral traffic, and puts agents to work on the gaps.
  • Best for: content, SEO and growth teams that find gaps but lack people to close them, and want a human to approve what goes live.
  • AI engines: ChatGPT on Free; ChatGPT, Claude, Google and Gemini on Pro.
  • Key AEO features: mentions, citations, sentiment, share of voice and recommendation position; competitor research showing the prompts and sources rivals own; query fan-out mapping. Agents prepare briefs, FAQs, comparison pages and refreshes from a shared Brand Knowledge Base, check claims, and hand approved work to WordPress, HubSpot, Sanity or Contentful.
  • Starting price: Free $0 (1 brand, 1 seat, 10 Agent Runs a month). Pro $89 a month (3 brands, 3 seats, 100 Agent Runs, Beam batch workflows, integrations). Agency $399 a month (3 client workspaces, 5 seats, 1,000 Agent Runs). Enterprise custom with SSO.

  • Watch-outs: Gemini isn't on Core, and Claude only appears on Enterprise. Core's page visibility scorecard tracks up to 10 pages.

Other AEO tools we looked at

Three more came up often but lean toward monitoring or don't publish key details.

  • Ahrefs Brand Radar: benchmarks any brand across an index of 505 million+ prompts, with Custom Prompts from $50 a month (2,500 checks) and the AI Visibility Index from $199 a month. Best for market research before you build a prompt list.
  • SE Visible: SE Ranking's tracker captures answers through the engines' interfaces. Basic is $99 a month (or $79 billed annually) with 200 prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode and AI Overviews, about $0.50 per prompt by our math.
  • Conductor: an enterprise AEO and SEO suite with a Writing Assistant, AI search reporting and site monitoring. Pricing is usage-based with no public prices; Essentials has a free trial.

Which AEO tool fits your team?

Match the tool to who will do the work, not just the budget. A tool your team never acts on is the most expensive one on the list.

AEO tool buying checklist

Run this list against the exact plan you'd buy, and get answers in writing.

  1. Engines on your plan: list the engines your buyers use and check each is included, not an add-on.
  2. Your own prompts: confirm you can add 50 to 100 of your real buyer questions during the trial.
  3. Citation-gap view: ask to see the URLs that name competitors but not you, for one prompt.
  4. Accuracy check: see whether the tool flags wrong facts about your brand, not only mentions.
  5. Answer readiness: check for crawler, page and content audits. Pair it with a manual AEO audit of your site.
  6. Who does the work: if nobody has time to write or pitch, require drafts, refreshes or outreach, plus human approval before anything goes live.
  7. Proof: confirm Search Console and Google Analytics connections. Google's free Generative AI performance report shows AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions by page, and Bing's AI Performance report shows Copilot citations.
  8. Real cost in six months: price the prompts, engines, seats and brands you'll need, then divide by prompts.
Treat scores as direction, not truth: AI answers change with wording, location and time. Track the same prompts on a fixed schedule, read the answers behind each score, and judge trends over weeks.

How Lantern helps

Lantern is built for the step most AEO tools leave to you: turning a citation gap into finished work. It shows where competitors are cited and why, then its agents research, brief, write and refresh content in your brand voice. Your team approves before anything is published, pitched or spent.

If you already have people to act on the data, a monitoring tool may be simpler. To see where you stand first, run a free AI Visibility Report. When you're ready to try the agents, Lantern has a free plan with ChatGPT tracking and 10 Agent Runs a month at $0.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AEO tool?

There's no single best AEO tool for every team. Execution platforms suit teams short on writers, Profound suits enterprises, Peec AI suits analytics-led teams, and Otterly.AI and HubSpot AEO are the cheapest starts. Shortlist two or three and run the same prompts through each.

Are there free AEO tools?

Yes, with limits. AthenaHQ has a free plan, Profound and HubSpot AEO offer free trials, and Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools report AI impressions and citations for free. Free options give you a baseline but cap prompts, engines or history.

How much do AEO tools cost?

As of October 2026, paid entry plans run from $29 a month (Otterly.AI Lite) to $295 (AthenaHQ Starter and Goodie Core), with HubSpot AEO at $50, Writesonic at $79 billed annually, Peec AI at $95, Semrush's toolkit at $99 and Scrunch at $250. Enterprise plans are usually custom. Add-on engines and extra prompts change the real cost.

What is an AEO tracker?

An AEO tracker runs a fixed set of prompts in AI engines on a schedule and reports whether your brand is mentioned, cited and recommended against competitors. It's the monitoring layer of AEO. Look for daily or weekly runs, per-engine results and the raw answer text behind each metric.

What's the difference between AEO and GEO tools?

Mostly the label. Both track and improve how AI answers feature your brand, and vendors use the terms interchangeably. The GEO research paper that named the field found optimization could boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses in its tests.

Do AEO tools replace SEO tools?

No. Google says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO, so crawlable, indexed, helpful pages still come first. Keep your SEO tools and Search Console, and add an AEO tool for prompts, citations and AI answers.
