Where New Brands Earn AI Authority

AI answers relied far more on third-party evidence than on the brands' own websites.

Top Takeaways

New-brand authority was built across an evidence network, not on a single company domain.

  • 67.7% of ChatGPT citation activity came from independent sources.
  • 77.6% of Google AI citation activity came from independent sources.
  • Competitor sources represented 28.0% of ChatGPT citations and 16.4% of Google AI citations.
  • Brand-owned sources represented 1.1% of ChatGPT citations and 0.5% of Google AI citations.
  • Every tracked brand earned at least one citation to its own website in ChatGPT.

What We Measured

Lantern classified the source links used in repeated ChatGPT and Google AI answers about four emerging brands. Each link was assigned to an independent source, a tracked competitor, the brand's own website, or another external source. The percentages below describe citation activity, not market share.

1. Independent Sources Carried Most Citations

Publications, guides, directories, reviews, and communities supplied 67.7% of ChatGPT citation activity and 77.6% of Google AI citation activity.

Competitor sources accounted for 28.0% of ChatGPT citations and 16.4% of Google AI citations, but independent sources remained dominant.

2. Specific Pages Gave AI Better Evidence

The brand with the broadest owned citation footprint earned links to product, editorial, homepage, and trust pages. The two platforms preferred different page types.

3. Owned Sources Played a Small, Specific Role

Brand-owned pages represented 1.1% of ChatGPT citation activity and 0.5% of Google AI citation activity. Small share did not mean no value: every brand earned an owned-page citation in ChatGPT.

Web mentions has a much stronger relationship with AI visibility than the number of pages on a website. The goal is not to publish more pages. It is to publish useful evidence and earn independent confirmation of it.

What This Means for PR and Content Teams

The strongest authority strategy connects clear owned evidence with credible third-party confirmation.

  1. 01

Earn coverage where AI already looks

Prioritize the publications, guides, directories, reviews, and communities that already appear in answers about the category.

  2. 02

Give every important claim a supporting page

Create focused product, service, evidence, use-case, and trust pages instead of asking the homepage to explain everything.

  3. 03

    Compete for the category narrative

Review the competitor pages AI cites and publish clearer evidence for the questions where competitors currently define the answer.

  4. 04

    Measure sources by platform

ChatGPT and Google AI used different source mixes and preferred different owned page types. Report them separately.
