The AI Recognition Gap

AI can know a brand's name without suggesting it to buyers.

Top Takeaways

AI can know that a brand exists without choosing it when a buyer asks for options.

  • 95.0%: ChatGPT correctly identified a brand when the question included its name.
  • 56.8%: Google AI correctly identified a brand when the question included its name.
  • 59.1%: ChatGPT answers included at least one source link.
  • 51.9%: Google AI answers included at least one source link.
  • One of four brands: Only one brand appeared in a live category test that did not name it.
  • One in five answers: That brand appeared in one of five audience-specific ChatGPT category answers.

What We Measured

Lantern tracked four emerging brands from April to September 2026. We repeatedly asked questions that named each brand and category questions that did not. We measured whether AI identified, cited, discovered, or recommended each company.

1. AI Knew the Brands Before It Suggested Them

When a question included a company's name, ChatGPT correctly identified it in 95.0% of answers. Google AI did so in 56.8%.

In a wider study of brands, mentions across the web had a much stronger relationship with AI visibility than backlinks or the number of website pages. The evidence surrounding a brand matters more than publishing volume alone.

Recognition Is Only One Stage

One visibility score can make a brand look successful even when AI never suggests it to buyers. Lantern measures six outcomes separately.

  1. 01RecognizedAI can explain the brand when the question includes its name.
  2. 02CitedAI links to the brand's website or another relevant website as a source.
  3. 03AssociatedAI connects the brand with the right category, audience, or use case.
  4. 04DiscoveredAI includes the brand even though the question did not name it.
  5. 05RecommendedAI presents the brand as a suitable option.
  6. 06VisitedA person clicks from an AI answer to the brand's website.

2. What Supports Brand Mentions?

Third-party websites accounted for 98.9% of ChatGPT source links and 99.5% of Google AI source links. Brand-owned websites accounted for just 1.1% and 0.5%.

3. Recognition Does Not Guarantee Discovery

ChatGPT recognized the tracked brands in 95.0% of brand-name answers.

A wider benchmark found the same gap at a larger scale: the median company was cited in only 3.0% of relevant Google AI answers, even though it ranked for thousands of related searches.

4. Platform Changes Can Look Like Brand Problems

Google AI recognition fell at roughly the same time for several unrelated brands. ChatGPT recognition stayed comparatively strong. Several brands in different markets are unlikely to fail in the same way at the same time, so the shared movement points to a platform change.

A wider study found that brand mentions were more stable than source links. Also expanding a tracked set from 10 to 100 questions reduced variation in reported brand coverage by about 73.0%. One answer is an observation; a repeated pattern is a useful signal.

What This Means for Marketers

The next stage is to turn established recognition and citation authority into consistent discovery and recommendation.

  1. 01

    Build an evidence network

Get accurate coverage on the publications, guides, directories, review sites, communities, and comparison pages that already appear in AI answers for the category.

  2. 02

    Expand beyond the homepage

Create separate pages for products, services, audiences, use cases, evidence, and trust. Each page should answer a clear question instead of repeating the homepage.

  3. 03

    Match real market context

Use the words real buyers use for their audience, location, problem, and use case. Test those exact situations instead of relying only on broad category questions.

  4. 04

    Measure every AI platform separately

Show a separate result for each AI platform. One average can hide a strong ChatGPT result and a weak Google AI result.

  5. 05

    Track progress as stages

Report recognition, source links, category association, discovery, recommendation, and website visits separately.
