ChatGPT Product Labels: What They Mean for AI Search

OpenAI is testing new product labels on ChatGPT results, adding short descriptive tags to some products shown in shopping responses. The test was recently spotted in ChatGPT’s product results, while OpenAI’s own shopping documentation confirms that some product images can include feature labels generated by ChatGPT. OpenAI says these labels are based on information available to the model, which may include third-party data, and are not guaranteed or verified statements.

The development matters because it shows how AI search is becoming more contextual. ChatGPT does not simply surface products based on a query. OpenAI says product results are selected according to perceived relevance to the user’s intent and can take factors such as product information, price, reviews, and other third-party content into account. AI systems increasingly help users compare and evaluate options, brands need to make their product information clear, accurate, and easy for AI systems to interpret. The current label test does not establish a new ranking factor or give brands control over how labels are assigned. It does, however, reinforce an important shift in AI search: visibility is increasingly about how a brand and its products are understood, not simply whether they appear in an answer.
