What Works

AI retrieval operates at the chunk level, not the document level. When an LLM ingests your content, it doesn't read the article top to bottom the way a human does. It captures passages typically 250 to 512 tokens each and evaluates them independently. If the answer to the question your heading asks is buried three paragraphs down, the chunk that gets captured is the preamble, not the answer.

Factual specificity concrete numbers, not hedged claims
Vague, general statements are the lowest-citation-rate content type in AI search. AI systems are built to synthesize and attribute evidence. Backlink-only authority building

Source influence — which third-party domains are driving your competitors' citations that aren't yet driving yours.
These are measurable. They just require different infrastructure than most teams currently have. And without them, GEO optimization is essentially guesswork with good intentions.
The Practical Summary
GEO is not a replacement for SEO. It's a second discipline that sits on top of it and requires its own content strategy, its own authority-building activities, and its own measurement layer.

The opportunity to establish that early position in your category's AI citation graph is real. The window is not permanent.
